Congress MPs Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Manish Tiwari and Randeep Surjewala are the four members of the party in the joint committee of Parliament to hold elections simultaneously. Jharkhand Congress MP Sukhdev Bhagat is the fourth candidate.
After a heated debate on Tuesday, two bills to create a mechanism for conducting simultaneous elections were introduced in the Lok Sabha.

Opposition parties termed the draft laws – the Constitution Amendment Bill and a General Bill – as an attack on the federal structure, a charge the government rejected.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi said the bills were “anti-constitutional” while talking to reporters on the Parliament premises.
“It is against the federalism of our nation. We are opposing the bill,” she said.
