The DoPT said that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension of tenure of lateral entry officers (on deputation/contract) beyond the date of completion of their respective tenure of three years on the terms and conditions applicable at the time of their initial appointment. .

Employees are assigned to the ministries and departments of revenue, health, agriculture, commerce, legal affairs, financial services, economic affairs, road transport and highways, steel, heavy industry, industry promotion and internal trade, food and public distribution.

As of 2019, 63 posts are filled through lateral route. At least seven officials have since left their jobs. The posts are open to candidates from the private sector, state government and public sector undertakings, autonomous bodies, statutory bodies, universities, and recognized research institutes. Tenure can be from three to five years.
