Virat Kohli has been dipping into his form for the last few years. Virat Kohli’s Test average now stands at 47.49, with 9,166 runs to his name. To put it in perspective, Kohli’s Test average in 2019 was consistently in the middle of the fifties, the highest being 55.10, and he was the only batsman to average 50 or more in all three formats once. For eight years, Kohli’s average has not gone below 47.5, and now, his batting average is the third lowest among players to score 9000 runs in Tests, and only one of the Fab Four with a Test average below 50.
His second innings in Perth gave a glimpse of a potential comeback for the former Indian captain, as he always brings his A-game down to the Border Gavaskar Trophy. But apart from the innings in which he scored his 81st international century in Perth, he has produced disappointing scores (5,7,11,3).
Kohli looked a little uneasy when facing a delivery in the first innings of the third Test in Brisbane, as he fell to his nemesis, a ball outside the stumps, bowled again by Josh Hazlewood. The dismissal brought his average to an eight-year low after the Test outing against England, when he averaged 47.50.
After scoring a double century against England in 2016, Kohli averaged 50 and did not go below that mark for six years. His outing in the Bengaluru pink ball Test match against Sri Lanka in 2022 saw him fall below that mark, and has never recovered since. He scored 23 and 13 runs in his two innings, while Shreyas Iyer’s 92 and 67 gave India a comfortable victory.
There are only 19 players who claim to have scored 9000 runs in Tests, and among them, Virat Kohli ranks third in terms of batting average. He is followed by Hashim Amla with 46.64 and Alastair Cook with 45.35.
