After the ‘Muslim majority’ comment, the Bengal minister said, ‘I am staunchly secular’ Kolkata News

With his alleged comments about the Muslim majority sparking backlash from the opposition BJP and Hindu monks, Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said on Sunday that he strongly believes in strong and patriotic values.

Speaking on the sidelines of an event in Kolkata, PTI quoted Hakim as saying, “I am a staunchly secular and patriotic Indian. No one can question my secular values and love for my country. Period.” On Saturday, a video went viral in which a senior TMC leader is allegedly heard saying: “We are from a community which constitutes 33 per cent of West Bengal’s population. In India, however, we contribute 17 per cent and are called a minority community. But we do not consider ourselves a minority. If We believe that if Allah’s grace is with us, we can one day become a greater majority than the majority.

“It will be the grace of Allah and we will achieve it by our strength. When something happens, our community will march with candles saying ‘we want justice’. Marching for justice will not work, raise your stature to the point where you can give justice instead of asking for it,” 4 Patak MLA and KMC Mayor said. –PTI
