The Kerala Police on Sunday arrested Shamnad Thannithurakkal of Perumbadappu, Malappuram, a notorious gangster and accused in several cases under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) from the Uttar Pradesh-Nepal border.
The arrest was made by the Thrissur police in collaboration with the state’s anti-terrorist squad. Shamnad is accused in 22 cases including attempt to murder.
He was arrested in a case registered at Vadakkekkad police station in Thrissur. He was hiding in North India and Nepal.
Shamnad is the main accused in a case in 2016, in which he posed as a vigilance officer and looted gold jewelery and other valuables from a house in Perumbavur. The case was later investigated by the Anti-Terrorism Squad, which filed a charge sheet. He got bail in that case. Later, Shamnad, who was involved in a case registered at Vadakkekkad police station, went into hiding.
Shamnad is said to have close ties with the terrorist group led by Thadiantabhida Naseer. The police are investigating those who helped to hide him. According to the press release of the police, he was arrested on the basis of a secret information given to the anti-terrorist team.
