Accused in POCSO case re-arrested after escaping from alleged lock-up

A man in custody in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO) managed to escape from the lock-up of the Aluva East Police Station on Friday (December 21) midnight.

The accused, 23-year-old Isaac, was allegedly tracked down in Mukkannur near Angamaly and re-arrested on Saturday. He was booked for sexually abusing a minor girl and after absconding in the middle of the night, was kept in a cell to be produced before a magistrate.

According to reports, the cell was not locked, and the accused sneaked out while the officer on guard duty went to meet other policemen who arrived at the station. He allegedly slipped his hand through the iron fence and opened the latch and then reached the second floor, from where he managed to escape.

The police have started an internal investigation into the incident. The accused will also be charged with escaping from lawful custody.
