Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said in a rambling post on X, “Such is their fate, since Mr. Modi refuses to find out the date, the people of Manipur are waiting, while the frequent flyer Prime Minister is off. Kuwait.”

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said the “frequent flyer PM” is going to Kuwait while the people of Manipur are waiting for him to visit the violence-torn state. Prime Minister Modi went on a two-day visit to Kuwait on Saturday to strengthen ties in defense and trade.

Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said in a rambling post on X, “Such is their fate, since Mr. Modi refuses to find out the date, the people of Manipur are waiting, while the frequent flyer Prime Minister is off. Kuwait.” The Congress has repeatedly urged Modi to visit Manipur, saying it would help restore peace and normalcy in the strife-torn state.

In Manipur, communal violence first broke out on May 3 last year after tribal solidarity rallies in the state’s hill districts protesting the demand for Scheduled Tribe status by the majority Meitei community.

Since then, more than 220 people from Meiti and Kuki communities and security personnel have been killed in the violence.

Meanwhile, PM Modi’s visit to Kuwait, the first by an Indian prime minister in 43 years, comes two weeks after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria and signs of a possible ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The last Indian Prime Minister to visit Kuwait was Indira Gandhi in 1981.

In a departure statement, Modi said the talks with Kuwait’s top leadership would be an opportunity to prepare a roadmap for the future partnership between India and Kuwait.
