Delhi is hit by smog as the air quality remains in the ‘severe’ category

People in Delhi woke up to a thick layer of fog on Saturday (December 21, 2024) morning. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the minimum temperature in Delhi has dropped to 8 degrees Celsius near Safdarjung in New Delhi while the maximum temperature is expected to touch 23 degrees Celsius at 8.00 am on Saturday.

At 8:30 am today, the minimum temperature of Safdarjung was 7.6 degrees Celsius and Palam was 8.7 degrees Celsius. A resident said, “It is our routine to go cycling. We don’t face any problem in winter or summer. We have a whole group in different parts of Delhi…”.

As of December 21, the overall air quality index (AQI) in the national capital has been recorded at 398, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), keeping it close to the ‘severe’ category. Air quality index was recorded at 414 in Delhi’s Anand Vihar while the number reached 413 in Dwarka Sector 8. Delhi University’s North Campus recorded an AQI of 376 while Lodhi Road’s number was 362.

The AQI in Delhi’s Rohini was recorded at 425 while the number in Najafgarh dropped to 398, but remained close to the ‘severe’ category.

Besides, the Republic Day parade rehearsal was going on at Kartikpath due to cold wave and thick fog covering the national capital. As seen from Delhi’s Akshardham, a thick layer of fog enveloped the area.

Meanwhile, the IMD has predicted severe cold wave conditions in remote areas of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. It also predicted cold wave conditions in isolated Punjab and Rajasthan. Dense fog at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh and East Rajasthan.
