“An earthquake of magnitude 3.7 struck Gujarat’s Kutch district on Monday (December 23, 2024) morning,” the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) said.

“No casualty or damage to property has been reported,” said the district administration.

“The tremor was recorded at 10.44 am with epicenter 76 km north-northeast of Lakhpat,” Gandhinagar-based ISR said.

This is the second earthquake of more than 3 magnitude in the district this month. According to ISR, an earthquake of 3.2 magnitude occurred in the district on December 7.

Last month, Kutch was hit by a magnitude 4 earthquake on November 18, 2024.

Earlier on November 15, an earthquake of 4.2 magnitude occurred in Patan in North Gujarat.

Gujarat is a high risk region for earthquakes.

According to Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) data, it has experienced nine major earthquakes in the last 200 years.

According to GSDMA, the January 26, 2001 Kutch earthquake was the third largest and second most destructive in India in the last two centuries.

Many towns and villages in the district were almost completely destroyed in the earthquake, killing nearly 13,800 people and injuring 167,000.
