VHP leaders arrested for disrupting Christmas celebrations at Palakkad school

The police have arrested three leaders of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on the charge of disrupting the celebration of Christmas in a school in Nallepilli near here. A team of Sangh Parivar activists, led by VHP leaders, crashed the gate and threatened teachers and students during Christmas celebrations at a government UP school, Nalepilly, on Friday.

VHP district secretary K. was arrested. Anil Kumar, 52, Zilla Samyojag Sushasanan Karuthedathukalam, 52, and Panchayat Samiti president Velayudhan Thekkumuri, 58. They were produced in court on Sunday and sent to judicial custody.

Various charges including incitement of religious hatred were leveled against them after the school principal S Jayanthi lodged a complaint.

The incident took place when the teachers and children were celebrating Christmas after the end of the mid-term exams on Friday. The Sangh Parivar team reached the school when the children were cutting the cake as a celebration.

Apart from threatening teachers and students, the Sangh Parivar team insisted that no celebrations would be allowed without Sri Krishna Jayanti.

The Kerala School Teachers’ Association (KSTA) protested the Sangh Parivar’s action, and demanded strict action against those who threatened students and teachers. The PTA executive committee of the school has demanded to ensure the safety of students and teachers in the school campus.
