Higher Education Minister Gov. Chezian requested the Governor-Chancellor RN Ravi to pave the way for filling the vacant post of Vice-Chancellor instead of creating obstacles in the process.
Responding to the governor’s statement the previous day, the minister said the governor was only repeating himself but pointed out that the state government followed the rules made in the state legislature.
He asked the governor not to create a crisis situation. The University Grants Commission can only make recommendations. The state is not required to follow the UGC recommendations, he reiterated.
Mr. Chejian said that while the state had followed the statutes of the respective universities while constituting the VC search panel, the governor appeared to have an ulterior motive in repeatedly demanding the inclusion of the nominees of the UGC chairman.
Although the minister got a rap from the court, he said the governor was unnecessarily poking his nose into the work of the state. It is a matter of concern that the governor has not mended his ways and his continued interference is beyond his brief, the minister said.
Due to his intervention, the functioning of many universities has been affected and there are concerns that it may also affect the future of students, Mr. Chejian said.
The governor should focus on ensuring that the state universities get funds from the UGC which have been drastically reduced or delayed for many years, he said.
He asked the governor to abandon his politically motivated attacks and work for improving the performance of the university as the chancellor.
Minister Bhattarai said that the government will solve the problem legally.
