Berlin streets were painted red, white and orange on Saturday afternoon when fans from both countries invaded it. However, festivities started much earlier than this. During the afternoon hours, Turks and Dutch met thereby making it turn into a pre-match party that was full of excitement.

Turkish Fans’ Confidence

However, despite Netherlands being favorites among other teams including Turkey itself., determined Turks stood by their own with unshakeable faith . One Sinan who was full of optimism affirmed that “In case we can beat Netherland today we will meet them in final.” This hope however wasn’t rewarded for Sinan or others holding similar sentiments since later Turkey lost to Netherlands thus firing their hopes for winning a championship.

Kadir one of such Turks had managed to obtain a ticket to witness the clash but on his face one could notice he was very worried. “I have not slept even an hour and not eaten anything . I hope all this happens soon so that I can eat something,” He explained with grief written all over his face. For fans like Kadir, there was lot emotional investment in this match.

Another fan Betir spoke about his excitement while wearing white Turkey jersey with Turkish flag over his shoulder. “It’s something really beautiful like you know when someone gets married within your family – you feel like that,” he said emphasizing how meaningful it is for Turkey people to reach quarter-final stage.

Dutch fan Max was sure that his team would win 3:1 in their match. His friend Chris predicted the final score would be 2:1 as it happened. “We are enjoying the city. The weather is great and there is good beer so we are having fun,” said Max who captured true spirit of joyousness among Netherlands supporters.

Tom also added “It is a big party here. Everything is orange and there’s lot of beer.” Dressed in an old-fashioned Dutch shirt with sunglasses perched on his forehead, Tom remarked how friendly he had been feeling both with German and Dutch fans.

A controversial sign

However, the celebrations did not proceed without arousing controversy. At one point during the Turkish fan march, police had to intervene because of repeated ‘wolf salute’. This gesture has its origin from Turkey’s ultra-nationalist as well as right-wing extremist faction known as Grey Wolves; however, it has not been banned but law enforcers have classified it as an inappropriate political symbol during such a rally march.

According to Beate Ostertag who spoke on behalf of police “The wolf salute has no place at such a fan march.” Therefore discussions concerning this gesture became even more intense after Merih Demiral (the Turkish player) got suspended from playing in two games because he made this gesture during Turkey’s round of 16 match. Many Turkish fans present at that rally felt misinterpreted saying that it wasn’t intended to be political or anything like that about peace sign used by human rights activists on photo shoots; they only want world leaders (especially presidents) to understand what ordinary people really need in order for them not being so atheist against those poor children who are suffering from poverty due to unfair decisions made by wealthy individuals.

But these doings didn’t hinder the day’s celebrations as they were marked by the colorful and spirited atmosphere brought by fans from both nations. The European Championship quarter final between Turkey and the Netherlands turned Berlin into a festive and lively hub, showcasing the passion and enthusiasm of football fans from around the world.
