Cyclists all over the world are in mourning for Andre Drege, a 25-year-old Norwegian cyclist who died yesterday after an awful crash during stage four of the Tour of Austria. This was after the rider met his death while descending the Grossglockner (which is also known as Austriaās highest peak), and has been regarded as one of the best up-and-coming talents within CoopāRepsol team.
The cycling community is still shocked by this accident, but it has come together to commemorate Drege. The final stage of the race has been cancelled by joint agreement among organizers of the Tour of Austria who have consulted with Dregeās family and his team. In its place will be a memorial ride which will let riders and fans mourn for Drege whose career was promising but abruptly ended.
There will be a minuteās silence before Kufstein starts off on its memorial ride. A similar act will happen at Tour de France where cyclists and fans will hold their peace to honor Drege before stage nine begins from Troyes.
The Director of Austrian Tour, Thomas Pupp, said that this memorial ride was meant to respect wishes of kinsmen and comrades of Andre Drege. By making it into a somber march, cycling community would find some comfort knowing that they celebrated life after early death had snatched away young sportsman.
Coop-Repsol, the team for whom he rode expressed how much they were heartbroken by Dregeās passing and asked people to keep off their grieving family members now. He was about to join World Tour with Jayco-AlUla Team in 2025 when tragedy struck his future looked very bright.
This is another sad reminder about danger associated with professional cycling. Also last year, during Swiss Race āTour de Suisseā, there was an incident resulting in loss life; it involved Gino Mader from Switzerland too.
