Tiruchi Government Museum College offers certificate course for students

More than 60 final-year students from the city’s arts and science colleges have undergone a certificate course in museology at the government museum in Tiruchi since October.

“This course is useful for those who want to work in museums or archaeology. We teach final year students on subjects like sculpture dating, numismatics, and the evolution of the Tamil alphabet using the artifacts housed in our premises. Recently, we conducted a workshop on conservation of palm leaf manuscripts,” said P. Manimuthu, curator (in-charge) of Government Museums, Tiruchi and Nagapattinam. Hindu Friday.

The official said the curriculum includes college-level history lessons. “Having a class for students with real artifacts sparks their curiosity about history. We recently organized a quiz competition in a college with pictorial clues to historical landmarks of Tiruchi. Such activities make history interesting for everyone. Many students do not prefer to study the subject because they cannot understand the context of the event,” he said.

Housed in Rani Mangamma Kolu Mandapam since 1997, the Tiruchi Museum has been closed to public for the past few years for maintenance work. Earlier this year, the state government had announced the construction of a museum building with modern facilities in Punjab near the upcoming integrated bus stand on the Tiruchi-Madurai National Highway.
