More than three weeks after the death of two PMJAY beneficiaries due to an alleged unnecessary angioplasty, Dr Sanjay Mulji Patolia, a bariatric surgeon and a director of a company that runs a reputed multispecialty hospital, was arrested by the Ahmedabad city police’s crime branch. (DCB) on Wednesday.
According to the crime branch, after receiving information that Dr Patolia was near Silver Oak Engineering College in Gota area of ββAhmedabad, they arrested him from there. He will be produced in court on Thursday.
Dr Patolia had been absconding from the police since November 13, when three separate FIRs were registered against him along with four of his friends and later four employees for murder and other serious crimes in a suspected racket run by them. Through misuse of Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana – Chief Minister Amrutam (PMJAY-MA) scheme.
According to the statement of the Crime Branch, Dr. Patolia was responsible for taking all the decisions related to the treatment of the patient. On November 12, a group of villagers from Borisana in Mehsana ransacked Khyati Hospital following the death of Mahesh Girdhar Barot and Nagar Moti Senma, who were among the seven PMJAY beneficiaries on whom the hospital had undergone surgeries.
The crime branch said, “On November 12, he (Dr Patolia) went to New Life Hospital in Rajkot, which he had established in 2006. On November 13 night, when he came to know that three FIRs had been registered against him, he left his SUV. He boarded the bus for Udaipur leaving behind his switched off phone. After November 15, the release added, Dr Patolia visited various cities including Nathdwara, Ajmer, Pali, Jaipur and Delhi before returning to Ahmedabad.
