New Delhi: A Delhi court is likely to deliver its verdict on January 8 next year in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case against former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar. Special Judge Kaveri Baweza, who pronounced the verdict on Monday, postponed the verdict.
“January 8 is the next date,” the judge said.
Kumar, who is currently in Tihar Central Jail, appeared in the court through video conference.
The case relates to the alleged killing of two persons in the Saraswati Vihar area during anti-Sikh riots.
On November 1, 1984, the court reserved its verdict after hearing the final arguments in the murder case of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh.
Punjabi Bagh police station initially registered the case, but later the Special Investigation Team took over the investigation.
On December 16, 2021, the court charged, finding a “prima facie” case against Kumar.
According to the prosecution, the mob, armed with deadly weapons, committed massive looting, arson and damage to Sikh property to avenge the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
It is alleged in the indictment that the mob attacked the house of the complainant Jaswant’s wife and killed her husband and son and also looted the house and set it on fire.
Putting Kumar on trial, the court order found sufficient material to form a prima facie opinion that “he was not only a participant, but also led the mob”.
