The Tamil Nadu government has issued an order to reconstitute the State Bird Authority, which was set up last year to monitor and improve bird sanctuaries, bird nesting conditions and eco-tourism facilities.

The government has decided to include Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Director, Advanced Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC) and Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Member Secretary, Tamil Nadu Wetlands Authority as members of the State Bird Authority. Accordingly, an amendment to the Government Order dated June 21, 2023 has been issued.

The committee, chaired by Secretary, Environment, Climate Change and Forests, also has representatives from various departments like Revenue and Disaster Management, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Public Works, and Tamil Nadu Tourism Department Corporation and Forests.

Earlier this year, the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) was amended to include the State Bird Authority as a member.
