Congress MPs including KC Venugopal, K Suresh and Manickam Tagore wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and alleged that Bharat Bloc MPs were physically prevented from entering and Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi was physically assaulted by three MPs from the ruling party.
In a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker, the Congress MPs claimed that they were protesting peacefully from Babasaheb Ambedkar’s statue in Parliament to Makardwar.
“However, when we tried to enter Parliament through Makardwar, the protesting MPs were physically blocked from entering. We would like to bring to your notice that Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi was physically assaulted by three MPs of the ruling party. This is a clear violation of the privilege accorded to the Leader of the Opposition and “Their conduct was not only an affront to Rahul Gandhi’s personal dignity but against the democratic spirit of our Parliament,” the MPs said. “We hope you will treat this matter very seriously and take appropriate action,” they added.
Earlier today, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, alleging that he was “physically assaulted” by BJP MPs during protests from both sides in Parliament over the Ambedkar dispute.
In his letter to Birla, Kharge highlighted that his protest was against Dr Ambedkar’s derogatory remarks in the Union Home Minister’s speech in the Rajya Sabha on March 17, 2024.
Earlier, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi had alleged that he was injured after being pushed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
Sarangi claimed that he suffered a head injury when another Member of Parliament fell on him while he was standing on the stairs. However, Rahul denied the allegation and said that he was also pushed and threatened when he tried to enter the Parliament. BJP MPs protesting near the entrance.
