Telangana Police has been honored with the prestigious Top Sustainability Initiative Award in the Challenger category at the Digital Engineering Awards held in Dallas, Texas.
Recognized for innovative use of GIS and AI technologies, the award highlights their exceptional efforts during the 2024 Ganesh Utsav idol immersion.
Organized by L&T Technology Services in partnership with ISG (Information Services Group) and CNBC-TV18, the awards celebrate global excellence in digital engineering and innovation. The Telangana Police initiative stood out for setting a new global benchmark by seamlessly integrating security, sustainability, and large-scale public coordination into smart city technology.
During the Ganesh festival, the Telangana Police managed the immersion of over 150,510 Ganesha idols, overcoming challenges such as crowd control, traffic management, and environmental stewardship. With the help of more than 15,000 municipal employees and 25,000 police personnel, the program was completed peacefully and sustainably.
The program relied on GIS-based applications developed with the Telangana Police Command Control Centre, which allowed for real-time tracking of pandals, crowd movements, and traffic flow.
AI-powered surveillance systems including over 733 CCTV cameras and drones were strategically deployed to monitor processions and identify issues like overcrowding or illegal parking. Geo-tagging of nearly 80,000 pandals ensured smooth coordination, while trained swimmers and emergency response teams enhanced security at immersion sites. Police also collaborated with municipalities to implement effective waste management and segregation practices while promoting environmental sustainability in the program.
Speaking about the award, ADGP (PCS&S) VV Srinivasa Rao expressed pride in the team’s achievement, adding that the recognition underscores Telangana Police’s commitment to blending cutting-edge technology with cultural celebrations to ensure safety and sustainability. He emphasized that the initiative demonstrated the transformative potential of combining technology and teamwork.
The Digital Engineering Awards, which received more than 230 nominations this year, were judged by a prestigious panel of experts, including experts, industry leaders, and technology innovators. Judging criteria focused on innovation, delivery accuracy, tangible business impact, and sustainable value creation. The achievement of Telangana Police not only highlights their forward-thinking approach but also cements their position as leaders in leveraging technology for public safety and environmental awareness.
Held annually, the Digital Engineering Awards highlight transformative ideas in the R&D domain, inspiring global organizations to adopt innovative practices.
