The cordon around Samajwadi Party MP Ziaur Rehman Barak, who was booked for violence during the Shahi Masjid survey, is tight, as the UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has warned that it may seize his property if he does not pay. Rs 1.91 crore fined for stealing electricity within 15 days.
MPs were fined on November 19 during the campaign against electricity theft and illegal connections in the district. On the same day, a case was filed against him for stealing a large amount of electricity. After that, the electricity in his house was also interrupted.
“We had sent a notice under Section 3 of the Electricity Act to the MP’s house on Saturday and given a deadline of 15 days to pay the fine of 19.1 million, failing which the District Magistrate will be contacted to issue a recovery certificate. And later go for attachment of their property to get government dues,” said Santosh Tripathi, Sub-Divisional Officer, UPPCL, Sambhal.
On the same day, on the evening of November 24th, a case was filed against the MP for inciting violence outside the Shahi Mosque during the survey conducted by the court. In the clash, four people were killed and many were injured, including a policeman.
On December 19, an FIR was registered against the MP’s father, Mumluk ur Rehman Barak, on charges of obstruction of duty by government employees. “Father has dared us that we will all be ruined if there is a change of power in Uttar Pradesh. He said, ‘Let the SP government stay in power, everyone will suffer the consequences’,” said Tripathi, threatening that our activities were recorded on CCTV cameras at his residence.
Executive Engineer Naveen Gautam has said that he will cut the electricity connection to the MP’s house until the fine is paid. “The two meters at his residence were showing zero readings for the past six months and the units were not above 100 for the remaining months of this year,” he said.
