Residents of Khajamalai blocked the road near the TVS Nagar bus stop on Saturday, alleging that the Tiruchi Corporation failed to address the frequent underground drainage problems in the area.
The Khajamalai region has seen repeated blocks in the pumping lines of the underground drainage network, leading to bursts. When a pipe bursts, some parts of the road are damaged and sewage overflows, spreading bad smell in the nearby areas.
Similarly, due to sewage blocks in the recent rains, there has been a threat to the health of the locals as the houses are filled with sewage. Even though the Metropolitan Municipality has done maintenance work, the problem is recurring due to lack of permanent solution.
Ward 60 councilor Khajamlai Vijay led the protest condemning the negligence of the corporation. Mayor M. Anbazgan reached the spot and held talks with the protestors. He assured to repair the damaged pipeline and rebuild the storm water drain within a month. Satisfied with his answer, the protesters dispersed from the scene. He then instructed the officials to speed up the repair work in the area.
