In 2014, the gangster Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu was caught by the police for the first time.
In July of the same year, Sangwan and his accomplices shot dead a man named Naresh Kumar at his house in Khaira village of Delhi’s Chhawla area. He was arrested after demanding a ransom of Rs 30 lakh from Kumar’s nephew Lalit. An FIR was registered in this case at Chhawla police station.
Born in 1991 in Nanda enclave in Najafgarh, Sangwan has 17 criminal cases against him, most of them related to extortion and firing, according to his documents with the police.
After the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party MLA Naresh Balyan, Sangwan is back in the limelight. Before his arrest, the BJP had played an audio clip of what it claimed was a conversation between him and Sangwan.
According to the crime branch, which last arrested Sangwan in 2016 in another extortion case registered at Chhawla police station, the gangster Nike is currently operating from London.
His brother Jyoti Prakash, who was out on interim bail in the murder case after Sangwan came out on parole in 2016, threw a “welcome back” party for his brother at a south Delhi farmhouse, police said. However, before reaching the spot, the crime branch raided the spot and arrested some of their accomplices. Prakash surrendered to the court the next day after the interim bail period ended, police said.
However, Sangwan was never seen again.
Sangwan, a resident of Haryana’s Mahendragarh, studied at KV Vikpasuri and KV Jharoda Kalan, police said. He graduated in Hotel Management from Amity University, Manesar.
According to crime branch officials, Sangwan’s usual style was to call businessmen and shoot them at their homes or offices.
They added that he was an accused in the murder of Haryana politician Nafe Singh Rathi. His name also came up in the murder of BJP leader Surendra Matiala, who was shot dead in Delhi’s Bindpur last year.
