One person arrested in alleged ‘virtual arrest’ scam

Kochi City Cyber Police on Tuesday arrested a person involved in the virtual arrest scam.

The arrested person is 38-year-old Lincoln Biswas from West Bengal. Police suspect that the accused is part of a big racket with roots in Cambodia and that he extorted β‚Ή 4 crore from a Kochi resident through a virtual arrest scam.

The accused is said to have tricked the victim by using the bank accounts linked to his Aadhaar card and pretending that he was employed in what is known as ‘virtual arrest’. He was then asked to transfer the money to the accounts suggested by them on the pretext of verifying his financial credentials.

The police have already arrested two persons from Malappuram who are suspected to be involved in the alleged crime.
