The noise level during singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh’s concert on Saturday (December 14) exceeded the prescribed limit, the Chandigarh administration told the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday (December 18, 2024).
The administration filed a petition in the division bench of the High Court.
Further information has been given to the court that it is recommended to take ‘severe action’ against the violators.
On December 13, the High Court allowed the Dosanjh program to be held the next evening and directed the organizers to follow the noise pollution rules.
Giving the green light to the program on Friday, a bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Anil Kshetrapal directed to strictly maintain ambient air quality standards for noise.
Recently, a PIL was filed by a resident of Chandigarh, seeking directions to the Union Territory administration on management of public events at the Sector 34 Exhibition Grounds, including those related to noise pollution and crowd control.
After the administration was asked to submit a status report, the standing advocate submitted an affidavit in the High Court on the matter.
It is mentioned that in compliance with the instructions of the High Court, the Deputy Commissioner of Chandigarh formed a committee to monitor the sound throughout the live concert.
“Diljit Dosanjh’s music program held on 14.10.2024, the noise level was monitored at various places and it was found that the nasal level exceeded the prescribed limit under the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000.
“Accordingly, action under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000 is proposed vide letter dated 16. 12.2024,” the Chandigarh administration said in an affidavit.
Last week, the High Court said it had no qualms in allowing events to be held subject to ambient air quality standards, with regard to noise being capped at a maximum of 75 dB (A) at the boundaries of public places. The program is about to be organized.
“If the noise level exceeds 75 dB(A), the official respondents are directed to take penal action against the organizers as prescribed by the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control Rules) 2000,” the court ordered while hearing the PIL. .
A Dosanjh concert was held here on Saturday evening. The singer kicked off the India leg of his Dil-Luminati tour from Delhi in October.
