National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) researcher Vandana Singh has been awarded a patent for developing an innovative menopause-care formula using indigenous grass species as the main ingredient.
An Ayurvedic physician, Dr. Vandana developed the Non-Hormonal Therapy (NHT) framework based on her clinical experience and ancient Sanskrit literature and principles. He collaborated with former scientist and pharmacist and Dinesh Kumar, said a press release on Thursday (December 26).
Dr. Vandana’s herbal alternative therapies addressed the need for treatment alternatives such as hormonal replacement therapy (HRT) against the backdrop of the US Food and Drug Administration’s recommendation to ban long-term HRT use.
According to the press release, the patented formulation follows Ayurvedic principles, and research includes plant species identification, quality criteria, proof of concept, regulatory compliance and prototype formulation. It aims to improve the quality of life of postmenopausal women.
The work has been shortlisted for the Alice and Albert Netter Prize 2023 by the European Society of Gynaecology, the statement said.
