Kannur University, which recently achieved the milestone of publishing the results within eight days of the final examination of the first semester of the four-year degree program, has been embroiled in controversy after allegations of premature results were leaked.
Kerala Students’ Union (KSU) vice-president P Muhammad Shammas alleged that the results were circulated in students’ WhatsApp groups around 3.30 pm on December 19, hours before the official release at 7 pm. He said the university announced the results in a hurry to manage the situation. Following this.
Mr. Shammas blamed the lapses on the K-Reap project managed by the Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited (MKCL) under the supervision of the Ministry of Higher Education. He claimed that there were systemic errors in the project and bypassed procedural norms.
Kannur University defended its achievement by highlighting the efficient use of the K-Reap platform, which enabled publication of results for 51 programs without technical glitches. The results were staggering to ensure easy access for students and college principals. Officials admitted that the results were temporarily visible on principals’ profiles during internal testing, with instructions not to share them before the scheduled release.
Results accessed by principals were shared prematurely when controversy escalated, leading to accusations of “leaks”. Vice-Chancellor KK Saju announced that an inquiry would be carried out to find procedural lapses and prevent future incidents.
Meanwhile, MKCL has alleged that the University Save Campaign Committee has violated Section 25(15) of the University Act and bypassed the approval of the University Syndicate. It criticized the university for focusing on college principals instead of addressing the role of MKCL.
The committee submitted a petition to the Vice-Chancellors of Kerala, Mahatma Gandhi, Calicut, and Kannur Universities expressing their concerns about the implementation of the Kerala Resources for Education Administration and Planning (K-REAP).
Also, the committee has requested to hand over the responsibility of K-REP software service to Digital University to make the examination process of the university transparent and efficient.
The petition highlights growing concern over the effectiveness of outsourcing examination management and calls for immediate action to protect the integrity of the university assessment system.
