Hyderabad:Former Supreme Court Judge V. Ramasubramanian, who was earlier in the Telangana High Court, has been appointed as the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) by President Draupadi Murmu.
The post of the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission was vacant since the 1st of June last after Justice (Retired) Arun Kumar Mishra completed his tenure.
Justice Ramasubramanian was born on June 30, 1958. He enrolled as a member of the Bar on February 16, 1983 and practiced in the Madras High Court for about 23 years.
He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madras High Court on July 31, 2006 and as a Permanent Judge on November 9, 2009. He was transferred to the High Court of Hyderabad for the States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. From April 27, 2016.
After the bifurcation of the state, on January 1, 2019, he was retained as a judge of the Telangana High Court. Later, he was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on June 22, 2019.
In September 2023, he was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court.
He delivered many notable judgments in the Telangana High Court and the Supreme Court.
He issued notable orders on the issue of sports quota reservation in medical seats, clarified the issue of presidential local quota, medical admissions and CS land issue, where the land was claimed by Nizam family members and other private parties.
As a judge of the Supreme Court, he was a member of the bench that heard the debate on the demonetisation policy.
