In Alkapuri Basti of Manikonda municipality, there was mild tension after the demolition of an illegal commercial property on the ground floor of an apartment complex on Thursday.
The operation was carried out by the municipal authorities with the help of Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) on the complaint of the residents of Morning Raga Apartments, said a statement from HYDRAA.
Traders who buy or rent commercial land from builders have protested against this move and claimed that they have been paying property tax, commercial tax and electricity tariff in the commercial category for a few years.
However, Hydra’s statement said that the building has only a residential permit and is not commercial. A complaint was lodged by 38 residents of the complex, who reportedly lodged a complaint with the police station three years ago.
HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath inspected the building two weeks ago and checked the building permits issued for the residential building. Earlier, Manikonda Municipality had issued a notice to the builders, but there was no response.
The statement also said that the demolition notice was given after giving enough time to demolish the building and it was claimed that the attempt to make a strong room for the bank operating from the building caused damage to the structure.
