Global furniture retailer IKEA is renowned for its in-house food offerings in many areas. Their meatballs are considered an iconic dish in stores around the world. The brand recently made a landmark in the dining industry by opening its first standalone Swedish restaurant on King Street in Hammersmith, London. The installation is located next to IKEA’s revamped Hammersmith City store. According to the company, the space housed Wasabi Restaurant and now seats 75 diners.
Menu highlights include IKEA’s mashed potatoes, peas, cream sauce and lingonberry jam, a veggie version of the same (called “plant balls”), penne pasta, salmon with couscous and yogurt, among others. There is also an offer. Called “Baby’s Pasta and Tomato Sauce,” it includes a soft drink and a piece of fruit. The establishment serves breakfast daily till 11 am. Guests can choose between combos like a six-piece “small cooked breakfast” (featuring bacon, sausage, hash browns, omelet, baked beans and tomato) and a nine-piece “regular cooked breakfast” that includes extra portions of bacon, sausage. And hash browns.
IKEA London City market manager Matthew Gould said in a statement, “We know how much our customers love IKEA restaurants and we’re excited to celebrate the opening of our first high street restaurant. Fans of our delicious dishes can recharge. Shop with our famous Swedish meatballs. During the journey, pop in for a traditional Swedish ‘fika’ break for coffee and a sweet treat, or find affordable food for the kids on the high street.”
The previously mentioned kids meal is the most affordable menu item highlighted and is currently priced at 0.95 GBP (around Rs 100). According to a report in The GuardianSome early customers of IKEA restaurants have praised the relatively low cost of food, especially by London standards.
