Millions of people in Britain and Ireland were left without power and millions were warned to stay indoors on Saturday as high winds and heavy rain battered the region.

Gusts of up to 93mph were recorded after authorities sent out a rare emergency warning by phone to around 3 million households in Wales and southwest England on Saturday morning.

On Friday, Britain’s weather forecaster, the Met Office, issued a red weather warning – the most severe type. Thousands of homes, many in Northern Ireland, Wales and western England, were left without power overnight.

Strong winds have closed major highways and bridges across the country and suspended many train services.

In Ireland, around 400,000 homes, farms or businesses were without power due to the storm. Some flights from Dublin Airport were cancelled.
