India’s chances of qualifying for the finals of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 will suffer a major blow if they lose the pink-ball Test against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Adelaide on Sunday.
India’s points percentage is likely to drop from 61.11 to 57.29 with the loss and Rohit Sharma’s side will drop below defending champions Australia and parallel contenders South Africa. India will play just three more Tests in this series to improve and reach their third consecutive WTC final. A 0-3 home whitewash against New Zealand has made the challenge even tougher after a sixth Test defeat and fourth in two months.
IND vs AUS 2nd Test Day 3 Live
Australia’s ninth win of the ongoing cycle lifted their PCT from 57.69 to 60.71, ahead of second-ranked South Africa (59.26), who could overtake the defending champions if they win the second Test against Sri Lanka.
How much can India lose from here?
To qualify for the WTC 2025 final without relying on others, India cannot afford another defeat in their remaining three matches. Moreover, India can only win a maximum of one draw and two matches to finish with a PCT of 60.52. With three wins, Rohit and Co can add 146 points at 64.05 pct which Australia cannot overhaul. For that, India will have to win 3-2 against the defending WC champions.
India’s WTC final scenarios
- If India beat Australia 3-2 They will finish with 134 points and a PCT of 58.77. After the series in Sri Lanka, with only two Tests remaining, Australia could do well with 126 points and 55.26 pct. With this, South Africa can extend their PCT to 69.44 with three wins in their remaining home matches against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
- If India beat Australia 3-1 They will finish with 138 points and a PCT of 60.52. If Australia win their remaining matches in Sri Lanka, effectively knocking them out of the race, they will then be able to finish with just 57 pct.
- If India draw Australia 2-2 They will finish with 126 points and a PCT of 57.01. In such a situation, Australia could lead to 130 points by the end of the series and knock India out of the race for the WTC finals.
