Honey Singh questions censorship of Diljit Dosanjh’s music: ‘First let’s make India a dry country…’ | Bollywood news

There is no doubt that 2024 was a landmark year for the actor-musician Diljit Dosanjh. His appearances on international talk shows, musical collaborations at the global level, the resounding success of his national and international concerts and of course, Amar Singh Chamkila make this year a definite highlight for the multi-hyphenate talent. But the startling success also came with its controversy. Chief among the advice he received was about singing songs with references to alcohol and violence.

Diljit received this at many of his concert venues, and he followed the instructions by changing the song, but also said, “If every state bans the consumption of alcohol, I will never sing a song about alcohol in my life…” Interestingly, Diljit got Ekta from popular rapper Honey Singh. In a recent interview to India Today, Honey referred to the dichotomy between states that offer this advice and earn revenue from liquor sales.

Honey Singh said, β€œThey are not closing liquor shops. Let’s make a dry state, let’s make India a dry country. Then we can talk about all this. In fact, he even went on to share his solidarity with the campaign for a liquor-free country. Although this may seem like a very ironic statement, especially since most of his songs contain some form of reference to alcohol, it should be noted that he has given up alcohol. “We will definitely join this campaign. We will sing about lassi, about chaas, about jal jeera. You know, something similar,” the singer joked.

Interestingly, when asked what he would do if his songs, particularly “Four Bottles of Vodka”, had to be reworded to comply with such instructions, Honey said that the song would only be a means. The iconic rapper also talked about how references to alcohol have slipped into everyday conversations, and are even part of the culture in many places. He said that the presence of alcohol in cultural and community festivals and parties cannot be called a ‘Punjabi’ thing. “We go to parties; people are drinking. We go to weddings; people are drinking. It’s in the culture, not just in Punjab…”
