Gunfire between armed groups in a fringe village in the Imphal Valley

Imphal: According to the police, there was a shootout between two armed groups in Manipur’s Imphal East district on Wednesday morning.

Gunmen fired at Sinamkom village from the hilly area of โ€‹โ€‹Kangpokpi district. Armed ‘village volunteers’ stationed in the hills retaliated and a shootout ensued, they said.

After the incident, additional security forces were deployed in the area, he said.

No injuries have been reported so far, police said.

On Tuesday night, gunfire broke out between militants and security forces in Imphal East’s Thamanapopi and nearby Uyok Ching, police said.

More than 250 people have been killed and thousands left homeless in communal violence between the Meitis and Kuki-Jo groups in Manipur since May last year.
