DU to start PhD in Hindu studies from new academic session Education News

Delhi University plans to introduce a PhD program in Hindu Studies in the 2025-26 academic session, as per the Standing Committee’s resolution.

The governing body of the Center for Hindu Studies has recommended conducting a PhD program in 2025-26.

Earlier, this program was targeted to start in the current academic session, but it was postponed as per the proposal.

The initiative for PhD in Hindu studies is aimed at creating opportunities for students, said Prerna Malhotra, co-director of the Center for Hindu Studies.

“Our Governing Board has recommended the initiation of PhD in Hindu Studies, and the matter will be taken up in the Academic Council. Students have approached the Centre, inquiring about research opportunities, especially those who have already cleared JRF and NET in Hindu Studies. As a flagship institution, Delhi University is committed to providing such opportunities and advancing research in diverse areas of Hindu studies,” she said.

Initially, the Center for Hindu Studies may offer 10 seats, including applicable reservation and supernumerary categories. It is mentioned in the proposal that the number of seats may increase in the future based on the infrastructure and educational needs of the center.

The Academic Council of DU will review and decide on the recommendation in its meeting on January 27.

After the Council approves the recommendation, the proposal will be submitted to the Executive Council, the highest decision-making body of the University, for approval.

“Continuing the decision made by the Governing Body of the Center for Hindu Studies on 21 June 2024, it has been decided to recommend PhD in Hindu Studies from the academic session 2025-26,” the proposal said.

Eligibility criteria for PhD program will be as per Delhi University guidelines. Applicants should possess JRF/NET qualification or Master’s Degree in Hindu Studies or related subjects with minimum 55% marks along with passing in University PhD qualifying examination.

Exemptions applicable to reserved categories will be granted as prescribed in the PhD Notification Bulletin.

Until regular appointments are made, research will be supervised by faculty from affiliated departments and colleges of the University with expertise and interest in Hindu studies.

Delhi University currently offers only a two-year postgraduate program in Hindu Studies. The Center for Hindu Studies, established in 2023 with a focus on Brahmanical texts, started its first MA batch in November 2023.
