Intensifying its agitation against the BJP, the Jammu and Kashmir Congress on Friday (December 20, 2024) continued its protests for the second consecutive day by holding a protest rally in Jammu and demanding the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his comments on BR Ambedkar. The Congress reiterated its demand for a public apology from Shah for his remarks, which it claimed was an “insult” to Ambedkar, and called for his resignation.

Led by J&K Congress president Tariq Hameed Kara, hundreds of party workers, leaders, former ministers and former MLAs took out a rally at Satwari Chowk to protest Mr. Shah’s remarks.

Carrying Congress flags and placards, the protesters shouted slogans against Shah and the BJP and demanded his resignation.

After a large police team stopped the protestors, there was a clash for a while.

“On the one hand there was a debate on the Constitution in Parliament and on the other hand the Union Home Minister made insulting remarks against Ambedkar. This is very unfortunate. Insulting a great leader cannot be tolerated,” Mr. Kara told reporters.

He accused Shah of using the opposite strategy during the discussion on ‘One Nation, One Election’ (ONOE) in Parliament.

“They dramatized the situation to draw attention to the inability to reach an agreement on ONOE due to opposition to the coalition. They also blamed Rahul Gandhi and registered an FIR against him,” Mr. Karra said.

“Shah’s comments are a direct insult to the people of the country and Babasaheb Ambedkar,” he added.

“We cannot tolerate such statements. We warn you not to make such comments in the future,’ he said while demanding Shah’s resignation and formal apology.

The Federation of Dalit OBC Minorities (DOM) also staged protests in Jammu against Mr. Shah’s remarks.

DOM workers led by state president RK Kalsotra raised slogans against Shah and demanded an apology.

In Udhampur, the Ambedkar Welfare Trust also protested against Mr. Shah and demanded his apology.
