Child marriage: Mangaluru court sentenced five persons to one year rigorous imprisonment

The Additional District Sessions Judge, Fast Track Sessions Court-2, Mangaluru has sentenced 29-year-old Mohammad Imtiaz, who married a minor girl, to one year imprisonment and a total fine of Rs 25,000 to his parents and the girl’s parents. . They were found guilty of child marriage.

Judge KS Manu on December 13, 2024, sentenced Imtiaz, his parents KA Mohammed and Maimuna and the 17-year-old girl’s parents Abdul Khader and Ramlath to one year in jail and a fine of ₹ 5,000 each. Imtiaz has been convicted of an offense punishable under Section 9 of the Child Marriage Prohibition Act. Mohammed, Maimuna, Abdul Khader and Ramlath have been convicted of offenses punishable under Sections 10 and 11 of the Child Marriage Prohibition Act.

Imtiaz married the girl on 31 May 2023 at the latter’s house in Ullal Taluk in the presence of himself and the girl’s parents and other family members. The wedding reception was held on June 1, 2023. Following the complaint, the women’s police booked Imtiaz and five others under Section 6 and Section 9 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. Sections 10 and 11 of the Child Marriage Prohibition Act.

The judge acquitted Imtiaz of the offense under Section 6 of the POSCO Act. Government lawyer Badrinath Nairi argued the case on behalf of the prosecution.
