New Delhi: The new BJP president, who will succeed incumbent JP Nadda, is likely to be elected by the end of February, according to a senior party functionary.
Party sources said the ongoing organizational elections are on track to complete the polling process in more than half of its state units by mid-January, an exercise that will unveil the process of electing its new national president.
A senior leader said that the tenure of around 60 per cent of the BJP’s state unit presidents is over, and their replacement is likely to happen by the middle of next month.
The BJP’s constitution stipulates that organizational elections must be completed in at least half of the state units before the process of electing the national president begins.
“We expect the new BJP president to take over by the end of February,” the activist said.
Asked if the new BJP president could be the person currently serving as a Union minister, he said it could be from the government or the organization, adding that nothing is final yet.
Incidentally, Union Health Minister Nadda took over as the party’s national president in February 2020.
Although the president’s term is three years, his term was extended in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections that saw the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance return to power under Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a straight term.
