In what is believed to be his final email, Shreyashi expressed his deep gratitude to his friends and teachers for their support over the past three months. She made it clear that her decision was her own, taking full responsibility for her actions and apologizing for any hurt her choice may have caused. The note ended with a heartfelt farewell.
Meanwhile, in response to the news, the registrar of the National Law University Delhi has declared October 1 as a non-academic day, issuing an official notification condoling the death of Shreyashi to the student community.
Research continues to report student deaths at NLU Delhi, marking a troubling trend as it represents the third student death in September alone and the fourth in the last three months. On September 4, BA LLB Honors third year student Amritvarshini Senthil Kumar was found dead in her hostel room. Our coverage of the Amrutavarshiny case revealed deep-rooted systemic issues affecting students at NLU Delhi, including caste discrimination, incidents of sexual harassment, and mental health challenges.
The university suffered another major loss on September 22 with the death of Shah Khushil Vishal, a first-year student. A few days later, on September 30, Shreyashi, a first-year student, was tragically found dead. This incident has raised serious questions about the measures taken by the college to protect the welfare of the students.
Published by The Probe on September 24, the touching note penned by Amritvarshini Senthil Kumar before her death offers an insight into the college experience, especially facing various challenges for those from underprivileged backgrounds. In her writing, Amritvarshini aims to initiate a discussion about inclusiveness, empathy, and the urgent need for radical change in academic spaces.
In our previous reports, we have highlighted a range of systemic issues that require the student community’s immediate attention, such as gender and racial discrimination. As some members of the student community have alleged that some of these cases have not been taken to a logical conclusion in the past, there is a need for more inclusiveness and effective resolution of reported incidents of sexual misconduct within the college.
