Ambedkar ‘snub’: Mamata calls for statewide protest against BJP on December 23 | Kolkata News

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called for a statewide protest against the BJP on Friday, December 23, accusing the party of insulting the founder of the Constitution, Dr BR Ambedkar. In a strongly worded statement shared on social media, Banerjee alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had made “derogatory remarks” in Parliament about Ambedkar and other members of the Constitution Drafting Committee.

“Insulting our constitution maker Babasaheb Ambedkar is unacceptable! This casteist BJP government has repeatedly attacked our democracy,” the TMC chief said.

He claimed that the BJP’s actions were exposing its “anti-Dalit” agenda. Calling the remarks an attack on the “backbone of the Constitution”, Banerjee called on people across Bengal to join the protests.

“Protest rallies will be held in every block, municipality and ward of Kolkata on December 23 from 2 pm to 3 pm in protest against the derogatory remarks against Babasaheb Ambedkar, and the insult to our freedom fighters.” said in a Facebook post.
