Airports reopen after Ukrainian drone strike in Kazan, Russia News Today News

The airport in the Russian city of Kazan, which was temporarily closed after a Ukrainian drone attack, reopened on Saturday, Russia’s aviation watchdog said.

Russian state news agencies reported drone strikes on a residential complex and other areas in Kazan, about 500 miles (800 kilometers) east of Moscow.

The Defense Ministry said the city was hit by three waves of drones between 7:40 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. (0440 and 0620 GMT). Three drones were reportedly destroyed by air defense systems and three others by electronic warfare systems.

There were no reports of casualties, the agencies said, citing local officials. Kazan’s mayor said in a telegram that all planned mass events in the city would be canceled over the weekend and authorities would offer temporary housing to evacuees.

The Baja Telegram channel, which is close to Russia’s security services, published unverified video footage of an aerial object crashing into a tall building, producing a large fireball.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the attack, saying Ukraine was “venting its impotent rage for a real military defeat on the peaceful people of Russia”.

Airports in Izhevsk, a small city northeast of Kazan, and in Saratov, about 400 miles (650 kilometers) south of Kazan, also temporarily suspended flight arrivals and departures, Russia’s aviation watchdog Rosaviatsia said via Telegram.

Restrictions on airports were later lifted, Rosaviatsia said.
