The Bar Council of India (BCI) on Saturday removed Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legal cell chief Sanjeev Nasir from the post of vice-president of the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) over alleged irregularities in his law (LLB) degree. The BCI has also decided to refer the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The BCI decided to take action against Nasiyar in a meeting held on December 7. Nasir’s degree is said to be “highly questionable”.

Reacting to his removal from the post, Nasir said that the BJP had weaponized the BCI against him. “I have done nothing wrong… I am not afraid of any investigation,” he added.

On September 3, a sub-committee probe flagged several alleged irregularities in the college’s law programme, which was unauthorized, tampered with records and the law degree was introduced after BCI rules in 2008 (while Nasir’s degree). degree date 1988).

The Delhi High Court had on August 12 directed the Bar Council of Delhi to provide necessary documents to the BCI while hearing a plea alleging that Naseer’s degree was fake. “Needless to say, if any wrongdoing on the part of the concerned university is exposed, it will be open to the BCI to investigate/take action as it deems fit,” the High Court said during the hearing. The petition was filed by former Delhi Bar Association president Naresh Chand Gupta, who was represented by advocate Surendra Singh Chauhan.

Terming the action against Nasir as “punishment” for his support of AAP, senior party MLA Durgesh Pathak claimed that the complaint against him was 18 months old and had been dismissed by the High Court.
