A weekend with theater in Pune: Two plays offer love and some laughs Pune News

Theater lovers in Pune are in for a great experience as Surnai Theater and Folk Art Foundation, led by acclaimed duo Ila Arun and KK Raina, brings two exciting plays to the city this weekend. Known for his engaging storytelling, Surnai presents the marvels in Matunga Street and Yeh Ashe Hain Pyaar Ke, offering the perfect blend of humor, emotion and thought-provoking themes.

This tour is special as Surnai, a Mumbai-based theater company with a rich heritage, celebrates 40 years of enthralling audiences. The company is bringing its artistry to Pune for the first time.

On Saturday, Miracles on Matunga Street takes viewers to a small barber shop where a mother and her three children put their faith in “Velankanni Amma”, believing that she will one day perform miracles for the family. But as the story unfolds, a surprising truth challenges their beliefs, mixing comedy with a powerful message about faith, family, and the stories we tell ourselves. Directed by Raina and featuring Prakriti Bhargava, Veena Puthran Bangera, Ruturaj Shinde and Arun, this Hinglish adaptation of Tom Dudzik’s Miracle on South Division Street promises laughter and reflection.

The second play ‘Yeh Vashdi Hai Pyaar Ke’ will be staged on Sunday. Set after the prolonged isolation of the Covid lockdown, it follows two strangers who meet regularly in a park. What begins as a casual conversation about life soon turns into a heartfelt exchange, revealing personal stories and the unexpected ways human connections can change lives. Raina has directed this play written and conceived by Arun. Vikrant Mishra, Arun and Raina will perform in it.

“They entertain with information and education – the perfect blend of education. Miracle on Matunga Street gives a glimpse of a crazy, loving family. They cry, they laugh and they have respect for each other, that’s the beauty of Matunga Street… Both stories tell of love that transcends age and boundaries. are rich. There is no particular time to start loving someone – this is what these plays are really about,” said Bhargava.

The performance will be held at Nehru Memorial Hall in Pune at 6.30 pm on both days.
