MLC CT Ravi was arrested after a dispute with Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar

Belagavi:In a dramatic turn of events at Belagavi’s Suvarna Soudh, MLC CT Ravi was arrested on Thursday after minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar filed a complaint against him for using abusive language during a heated debate in the Legislative Council.

According to the complaint lodged at the Bagewadi police station, CT Ravi is accused of using foul language and making obscene gestures at Hebbalkar.

The police registered an FIR under Sections 75 (sexual harassment) and 79 (words, gestures or actions insulting the modesty of a woman). When the FIR was registered at 5 pm, the police immediately arrested Ravi.

The arrests followed a tense debate in the session that saw sharp exchanges between Congress and BJP leaders over controversial statements made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Congress members carried portraits of Dr BR Ambedkar in protest, while BJP leaders responded by confronting the opposition.

Amid the political drama, tension has increased between CT Ravi and Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar. Ravi’s criticism of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi prompted a rebuttal from Hebbalkar, who reportedly objected to his remarks and attacked him in an earlier incident. It is at this point that Ravi is said to have used offensive words against Hebbalkar, which has sparked outrage among Congress leaders.

MLCs Umashree, Yatindra Siddaramaiah and BK Hariprasad, who were present at the meeting, condemned Ravi’s alleged remarks.

Outside Suvarna Soudh, Hebbalkar’s supporters gathered in a protest demanding action over the alleged verbal assault. The police immediately intervened and dispersed the crowd and ensured that there was no disturbance in law and order.

Meanwhile, Hebbalkar and his MLC brother Channaraj Hattiholi’s allies confronted Ravi in the corridor after the session. Sources suggest that they tried to attack him, but BJP MLC Kishore and Marshals quickly intervened, preventing further escalation. Video footage captured aides advancing towards Ravi, marshals stopping them and aides kicking at the gate and trying to get past marshals to Ravi.

Angered by the incident, Ravi staged a protest criticizing the security arrangements of the elected representatives.

“If we are given this kind of security, what can the general public expect?” He questioned the altercation, describing it as a “deliberate attack”.

He also claimed that he did not use any abusive words against Lakshmi Hebbalkar.

“I don’t know why they (Congress leaders) think I used that word,” he added.

When Ravi protested his arrest, police officers took him into custody, while BJP leaders who rallied in his support were also detained.
