The Aam Aadmi Party in Goa on Wednesday (Dec 18, 2024) alleged that the defamation suit filed by Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s wife against party leader Sanjay Singh was a conspiracy to keep him away from the Delhi Assembly election campaign.

The Delhi assembly elections are likely to be held in late January or early February next year. The election is likely to be a triangular contest between the ruling party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress.

Sulakshana Sawant, wife of the Goa Chief Minister, filed a defamation case against Sanjay Singh in a court in North Goa’s Bicholim village on Tuesday. She has sought Rs 100 crore compensation from the AAP politician for allegedly taking her name in the cash-for-work scam.

The court issued a notice to Singh in this regard and asked for a reply by January 10, 2025.

Rajya Sabha member Singh recently addressed a press conference in Delhi where he leveled allegations against Sulakshana Sawant.

Speaking at a press conference on the matter here, Aam Aadmi Party’s Goa unit general secretary Valmiki Naik said Singh was targeted for wasting his time by appearing for defamation as he was one of the party’s star campaigners in the Delhi elections. case

“Delhi assembly elections are scheduled to be held in late January or early February next year, for which campaigning is underway. Singh is one of the top three campaigners of the party and they (BJP) want to waste their time by implicating him in such cases,” he alleged.

Naik said that while Singh was holding a press conference in New Delhi, a case had been filed against him in Goa’s Bicholim which required him to go here for a court hearing.

“We don’t know how long the case will take, but the complainant will have to submit evidence in court about what Singh said and how it defamed him,” he said.

Naik said that the filing of this defamation case is an attempt to divert attention from the accused Siddiqui Sulaiman Khan who absconded from the custody of the crime branch in the land grabbing case.
