A sugarcane cutter and his wife died while they were sleeping when a tractor crushed their hut in a field in Pune’s Shirur taluk on Monday morning. The police have detained the tractor driver.
Pune Rural Police officials said the incident took place around 3 am on Monday at Nirvi village in Shirur taluk, about 70 km from Pune city.
According to the police, 45-year-old Ganpat Kachru Wagh and his wife Shobha Ganpat Wagh (41) are among the deceased. The two are survived by their sons, who registered the FIR on Tuesday. The couple hailed from Yeola in Nashik and had temporarily moved to Shirur to cut sugarcane.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the husband and wife were sleeping in a hut built near a field in Nirvi village. At around 3 am, the tractor was returning from delivering sugarcane to a nearby sugar mill. The tractor driver lost control and fell off the road into the field. It fell into the hut. The husband and wife were crushed under the tractor. It is assumed that he died on the spot,’ said an officer of Shirur police station.
As the tractor driver could not control the vehicle further, the vehicle fell into the canal near the field. The tractor driver Rahul Sonawane, who was absconding from the spot, was later arrested, the official said.
