Calcutta High Court denies anticipatory bail to businessman Sujay Krishna Bhadra for missing court date. Kolkata News

Trouble grew for Kolkata businessman Sujay Krishna Bhadra on Monday after a division bench of the Calcutta High Court dismissed his advance plea regarding the Central Bureau of Investigation probe into alleged irregularities in the teacher recruitment scam.

Bhadra, known as ‘Kalighatar Kaku’ or ‘Kalighat’s uncle’, was denied anticipatory bail after he was found not to appear in some courts. Notably, Bhadra failed to appear in court twice due to health problems in November, jail officials submitted his medical report.

The development, which comes less than a month after the High Court granted him bail pending an Enforcement Directorate probe into the case, means the CBI may take him into custody.

Bhadra was arrested last year for “non-cooperation in investigation” for transferring proceeds of crime from his firm to M/S Leaps & Bounds Pvt Ltd, a company associated with Trinamool Congress MP and general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.

While granting him bail under “stringent conditions” earlier this month, Justice Shubhra Ghosh said that “necessarily depends on the statement of the petitioner and co-accused” and the recovery has been “appropriately”. However, the high court asked him to deposit his passport and provide his phone number to the authorities.

Soon after that, the CBI sought his custody.
