Odisha woman dies, withdraws surrogacy petition

Hyderabad: The accused in a surrogacy case in which a woman from Odisha died last month has withdrawn her plea from the High Court for a child through surrogacy, said Ch Venkanna, Rayadurgam station house officer.

On the intervening night of November 25 and 26, a woman from Odisha was killed when she tried to escape from the eighth floor of Ashita Singh’s apartment complex. She was brought as a surrogate mother for real estate businessman Rajesh Babu’s children.

He allegedly suffered harassment and died while fleeing the apartment. Rajesh Babu was prosecuted on charges of abetting suicide. He was arrested the same day and granted bail.

The police confirmed that the victim and her husband were not aware of the process of surrogacy and that the woman was upset because she could not meet her husband.
