Tabla player Zakir Hussain passed away at the age of 73. Hussain was admitted to a hospital in the United States and was being treated for a ‘severe’ heart condition in San Francisco. The Padma Vibhushan awardee’s admission was posted by journalist Parvez Alam on social media where he confirmed that the legendary musician’s son-in-law Ayub Aulia had been hospitalized. He wrote, ‘Ustad Allah Rakh, son of Ustad Zakir Hussain, tabla player, percussionist, musician, former actor and veteran tabla player, is not well. He is undergoing treatment at a San Francisco hospital in the US due to a serious illness, informed his brother-in-law Ayub Auliya… Auliya Sahab has requested Zakir’s followers to pray for his speedy recovery.
Hussain, born in 1951, was considered one of the greats. He was awarded Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan. He also won a Grammy in the Contemporary World Music Album category in 2009. He was famous for his collaborations with many western musicians including The Beatles.
This year, at the 66th Grammy Awards, he became the first Indian to win three trophies in a single night.
