Travis Head, who cleared a fitness test and was named in Australia’s playing XI for the Boxing Day Tests starting on Thursday, has been hailed as the ‘best batsman in the world’ by Australian legend and former India coach Greg Chappell.
Chappell said Travis Head’s “fearless approach” exemplified the “Australian way of batting” and praised him for the way he faced India’s Jasprit Bumrah.
Travis Head continues to be the most dominant batsman in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, scoring 409 runs in the first three Tests with two centuries and a half-century.
Writing in the Sydney Morning Herald, Chappell attributed his success to Travis Head’s simplicity and aggressiveness. “Head’s performance against Jasprit Bumrah in this series exemplifies his fearless approach. While most batsmen struggle to cope with Bumrah’s unorthodox action, blistering pace and relentless accuracy, Head has treated him like any other bowler,” wrote Chappell.
“Playing with purpose and looking to score Bumrah, Head not only nullified his threat but disrupted his rhythm. His ability to deliver short deliveries with authority and drive fullers with precision is remarkable, underscoring the strides he has made.”
He suffered a quad strain in his head during the third Test in Brisbane. There were concerns about his availability for the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground but he passed a fitness test in an alternative training session on Christmas Day, captain Pat Cummins said.
Chappelle said Travis Head’s flourish in formats in recent years is due to a no-nonsense mentality. “From raw, unexpected talent to one of the most influential male batsmen in world cricket, Travis Head has risen through his prime with an almost ethereal elegance,” commented Chappell. “His story is not just about overcoming challenges but about embracing the simplicity of style that has become his signature—one that allows his mind to remain uncluttered and his playing to be devastatingly effective.”
