After hitting ‘rock bottom’ against Madrid, Mbappe scored again

Madrid: Kylian Mbappe added to his scoring streak with a superb strike in Real Madrid’s 4-2 win over Sevilla in the Spanish league on Sunday and ended the year on a positive note after hitting “rock bottom” in early December.

Mbappe sent a right-footed shot into the top corner 10 minutes into the game, his fourth goal against Madrid in all competitions. This is Mbappe’s sixth goal in the last eight games with Madrid.

He struggled early on with his new club, and Mbappe said his lowest point came when he missed a penalty kick in the team’s 2–1 league defeat at Athletic Bilbao on 4 December.

“I know I have a lot of days left,” Mbappe said on Sunday. “The last few games I’ve played well, I took a lot of positives from the Bilbao game, when I hit rock bottom.”

“This jersey makes me realize that I have to give my all and play with personality,” said the French star.

Mbappe has said he feels his adjustment period with the club is finally over.

“I think we know each other better now,” he said, “I have joined the team and it has changed a lot of things. As the coach said, the settling period is over. I feel very comfortable in the team and I play well with others on the field. The team is very good. is playing

Federico Valverde, Rodrigo and Brahim Diaz also scored in a comfortable home victory that moved Madrid within a point of Spanish league leaders Atletico Madrid.

Atlético shocked Barcelona 2-1 on Saturday and Alexander Sorloth scored in injury time. Third-placed Barcelona is two points behind Madrid, who have played extra games.

Valverde scored in the 20th and Rodrigo in the 34th before Sevilla got on the board with Isaac Romero in the 35th. At the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, Diaz extended Madrid’s lead in the 53rd minute and Dodi Lucebaccio added another goal for the visitors in the 85th minute.

“It was a well-played game, with many goal-scoring situations, a good end to the year,” said Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti. “We want to stay close to the top and have some good rest for 2025.”

Madrid will play Valencia on January 3 in a game postponed due to the deadly floods in Valencia in October.

Sevilla, who are in 14th place, have won their last two matches in all competitions.

Navas’ farewell This was the last game for Sevilla and Spain great Jesus Navas, who is officially retiring at the end of the year. Sevilla and Madrid players and fans paid their respects to the defender at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Before the match, players from both teams gave Navas a guard of honor on the line as he entered the field, and veteran Madrid midfielder Luka Modric presented him with a club jersey signed by the players. Fans gave Navas a standing ovation at the ceremony.

In the middle of the second half, substitute Navas came on.

“What happened today was fantastic,” the 39-year-old Navas said after the match, unable to hold back tears. “I’ve never seen anything like this in my life on a rivalry field. It was crazy. I couldn’t see anything in those last minutes. I was looking at the field remembering all the moments I was able to give to Sevilla and the national team.

Navas helped Sevilla win four Europa League titles and Spain won the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 and 2024 European Championships. He was with Manchester City when they won the 2014 Premier League.

“Navas really deserves it,” Ancelotti said. “Navas is an example for everyone.”

Valencia equalize in last minute of second-half Valencia drew 2-2 with Alaves after Danny Gomez scored eight minutes into second-half stoppage time before the visitors took the lead through Joan Jordan in the 88th minute.

The setback led to further protests from Valencia fans who were unhappy with team owner Peter Lim’s administration.

Other results Thierno Barry scored a hat-trick and Gerard Moreno and Pau Cabanes added a goal each as fifth-placed Villarreal beat Leganes 5-2, while Las Palmas beat 18th-placed Espanyol 1-0. Ninth-ranked Real Betis was stopped by 12th-ranked Rayo Vallecano in a 1-1 draw at home.
